About Music Club

Music Club

This site is the home of our school's Music Club.  Its primary purpose is to communicate information and updates to its members about meetings and topics of discussion. Since music is increasingly connected with technology, this will be a way to keep ourselves up with the times while still retaining our integrity as an intellectually-driven club.

The purpose for this club is not just to listen to music – we can do that anywhere. Instead, the purpose is to foster community by bringing people with all different preferences together to listen to music they might never consider. It is not about likes and dislikes, but rather about critical listening and intelligent discussion about both the music itself and the role it plays in our lives. The idea is to get people to look at music from a different angle and in a different context than they are used to. Many people are strongly influenced by music, and this club will be a place to trace this influence to its sources, and to explore what makes music have such an effect on people. Artists, genres, and specific albums are picked apart for review and critique, and discussed in a way that pushes members to think more deeply about what they listen to every day.

This club meets at school every other week.  Each week the members of the club have a “homework assignment” of listening to a particular album or select songs of a certain artist and coming in prepared to discuss them the next week.  After discussing the topics that I have prepared for each week, the floor is open for anyone to propose a topic of discussion or to raise a question or offer an opinion to the group. The idea is that everyone is able to say what they want, as long as it is done respectfully (i.e. not “this music is terrible!”). Anyone can also give suggestions for albums to be reviewed in the future – the more sources we get our music from, the better! Ultimately, I want people to come out of the club with a different perspective on music and the role it plays in all of our lives every day.

About Me

My name is Hannah McDonnell, and I am the president and founder of Music Club. I have always loved music, but over the years as my music collection and my passion for discovering new music grew, I realized that just loving and listening to music was not enough for me. I wanted to discuss, to learn about, to experience music from all angles, and I wanted to share that with other people who had the same interests as I did. My friends jokingly called me a “music snob,” but when they wanted recommendations or an opinion on a new album, they always asked me for help.

Before I knew it, word had spread, and people outside of my closest friends were timidly asking me for mix CDs and playlists, because they were “bored” of the music they always listened to. In my opinion, no one should ever get to the point of being bored of music – there are always new genres, artists, or albums that can spark your interest again, if you just know where to look. This was what gave me the idea to start Music Club; I knew that if people were involved in music on a deeper level and were made aware of all of the music that is out there and what makes it good, then they would no longer be bored of what they were listening to. In addition, I created this website to broaden the expanse of what our club does, and to make it more accessible to everyone, including people that have an interest in music but aren't able to attend our meetings.
